Arctia matronula helena ( Dubatolov & Kishida, 2004) ( Figs 1 View Figure 1 G-H, 2C)

Pericallia matronula helena Dubatolov & Kishida, 2004 ; Tinea 18 (3): 226-227, fig. 8-10, 17-19. Type locality: “Southern Kuriles, South- Western Kunashir, Cape Ivanovsky”.

Diagnosis. In addition to significant genetic differences (1.2%), A. m. helena has two subterminal spots (large and small) on the forewings (large spot is smaller or absent for the nominotypical subspecies, and small one is absent), and also the merging antemedial spots on the hindwings (they are not merging for the nominotypical subspecies, but there are exceptions) ( Fig. 1 View Figure 1 ). This subspecies is characterized by the apical valva processes noticeably narrowed to the apex, with well visible broadening in the central part; the dorsal basal processes of the costa of the valva are narrow, finger-like, two times longer than the ventral one ( Dubatolov & Kishida 2004).

Distribution: South Kuriles: Kunashir; Japan: Hokkaido, Honshu ( Dubatolov 2010).
