Phaniosoma apennina Rondani, 1856 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1856: 74.
TYPE LOCALITY: Rondani gave no type locality in his original description but later (1861e: 73) added “ Apennino Parmensi [ Parmese Apennines ( Italy)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (partially eaten by dermestids, missing mid- and hind-legs) ( MZUF: Box 15): Phaniosoma Mgn / apennina Rnd. / 807.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Besseria lateritia ( Meigen, 1824) ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 433, O’Hara et al. 2020: 545).
REMARKS: Rondani’s (1856: 74) key for the genus Phaniosoma Rondani, 1856 lists Phaniosoma apennina as its type species, but he did not provide a detailed description, type locality, number or sex, aside from a specific character for the male, of the specimens. He later ( Rondani 1861e: 73) wrote: “ semel marem invenit … Doct. Bérteus [once Dr. Bertè collected the male]”. We found one syntype in this study.
