ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1861c: 271 (key), 273 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Italia media et Litorea [central and coastal Italy]” ( Rondani 1861c: 273); Rondani (1861e: 125) gave “ in Liguria … et ab Etruria [Liguria … Etruria (= Tuscany) ( Italy)]”.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Cylindromyia auriceps ( Meigen, 1838) ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 431) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1861c: 273) described Ocyptera mussinii from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, despite there being four specimens in the type series found in this study. Rondani (1861e: 125) stated: “ masculum in Liguria captum prius observavi in collectione D. Mussino , et in posterum aliud exemplar sexus ejusdem ad Etruria a D. Piccioli [I observed the male collected in Ligura in D. Mussino’s collection, and later an additional specimen of the same sex collected in Etruria by D. Piccioli]”. An additional MZUF male numbered “863” from “Sicil. [= Sicily]” is not included in the type series because it is not from the type locality.
