ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1861c: 272 (key), 275 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Italia media [central Italy]”; Rondani (1861e: 128) gave “ Etruria [= Tuscany]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♀♀, syntypes (one missing right mid-leg) ( MZUF: Box 16): Ocyptera Fab. / picciolii Rnd. / 869.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Cylindromyia auriceps ( Meigen, 1838) ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 431) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1861c: 275) described Ocyptera picciolii from just the female sex, without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens, from material received from F.M. Piccioli. We found two female syntypes in this study. A male in the MZUF numbered “869” is not included in the type series because of its sex.
