ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:1862c: 142 (key), 143 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus sub-apenninis agri parmensis [ Parmese sub-Apennine hills ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype (completely covered with mold, missing left mid-leg) ( MZUF: Box 18): Zeuxia Mgn / subapennina Rnd. / 986; 1 ♀, syntype ( MSNPV: Box 95): Zeuxia subapennina Rnd. , 478, Apenn. [= Apennines].

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 370, Pape et al. 1995: 28, Cerretti 2010: 443, O’Hara et al. 2020: 87).

REMARKS: Rondani (1862c: 143) described Zeuxia subapennina from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths: “ Foeminas tantum raro legi [I collected the females only rarely]”. Herting (1969: 201) reported one female in the MZUF. We found two syntypes in this study.

UNAVAILABLE NAMES AND MISIDENTIFICATIONS

[ Albertia rubrigaster ] Rondani, 1843d: 39.

REMARKS: name that Rondani (1843d: 39) proposed as a synonym of Stomoxys pedemontana Meigen, 1824 and was not made available by use as a valid species before 1961. Bezzi (1906: 1) and Bezzi & Stein (1907: 199) considered Albertia rubrigaster as a junior synonym of Peletieria ferina ( Zetterstedt, 1844) . O’Hara et al. (2011: 213) considered the name as unavailable. It is not included in Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993).

[ Chetolyga segregata ] Rondani, 1873d: 164.

REMARKS: nomen nudum. Rondani (1873d: 164) mentioned this species in a list of insects useful for pest control but did not provide any description. O’Hara et al. (2011) did not list this name.

[ Cylindrogaster lateralis ] Rondani, 1861e: 137.

REMARKS: a Macquart manuscript name that Rondani (1861e: 137) proposed as a synonym of Cylindrogaster sanguinea ( Meigen, 1824) and was not made available by use as a valid species before 1961. O’Hara et al. (2011: 210) considered the name as unavailable. It is not included in Bezzi & Stein (1907) or Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993).

[ Cylindrogaster sanguinea ] Rondani, 1861e: 137.

REMARKS: misidentification. Rondani (1861e: 137) redescribed Cylindrogaster sanguinea attributing it to Meigen who, however, had never described a species with this name in the genus Cylindrogaster Rondani, 1861 , while he had described a “ sanguinea ” in the genus Tachina Meigen, 1803 ( Meigen 1824: 283) . Bezzi & Stein (1907: 427) and Herting (1969: 200) considered Rondani’s redescription to be that of a new species and incorrectly attributed Cylindrogaster sanguinea to Rondani. Herting (1969: 200) reported the two nominal species as belonging to different genera and thus not homonymous. Herting & Dely-Draskovits (1993) and O’Hara et al. (2011) did not list this name.
