Urophora veruata Rondani, 1870 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1870a: 14 (key), 18 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Apennino parmensi [ Parmese Apennines ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, lectotype (missing right wing, abdomen in microvial pinned below specimen) ( MZUF: Box 32): Urophora Desv. / veruata Rnd., Apen. [= Apennines] / 1693 / To be lectotype [not designated] Urophora veruata Rondani , det. I.M. White, 1986; 1 ♀, paralectotype (dirty, damaged by the pin, abdomen in microvial pinned below specimen) ( MZUF: Box 32): Urophora Desv. / veruata Rnd. / 1693 / paralectotype [not designated] Urophora veruata Rondani , det. I.M. White, 1986.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Foote 1984: 145); junior synonym of Urophora solstitialis (Linnaeus, 1758) ( White & Korneyev 1989: 360, Norrbom et al. 1999: 243).

REMARKS: Rondani (1870a: 18) described Urophora veruata from just the female sex without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens: “ Bis foeminam … legi [I collected the female twice]”. White & Korneyev (1989: 359) reported two females in the MZUF. Ian M. White examined the MZUF type material in 1986, adding the label “ lectotype ” and “ paralectotype ” under the specimens, but without, as far we know, formally publishing a lectotype designation. In order to promote nomenclatural stability, we give credit to I.M. White and here designate as a lectotype for Urophora veruata Rondani, 1870 the female labeled as such by him.
