Tripeta steropea Rondani, 1870 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1870c: 107 (key), 109 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Italia australiori [southernmost part of Italy]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study. See Remarks.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Orellia steropea ( Foote 1984: 107) ; valid species, as Chaetostomella steropea ( Belcari et al. 1995b: 9, Norrbom et al. 1999: 123).

REMARKS: Rondani (1870c: 109) described Tripeta steropea from a single female: “ Foeminae specimen a Cl. Haliday … lecta [Mr. Haliday collected one female specimen]”. This nominal species was described under the generic name Tripeta , which is an “unjustified emendation of Trypeta Meigen, 1803 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 185). We were unable to locate any type material of this nominal species in our study. There is a label for Tripeta steropea in the MZUF (Box 32) but no specimen or even the trace of a pin hole.
