This family of acalyptrate flies contains more than 4,800 species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1856, 1863, 1868b, 1870a, 1870 c, 1871b, 1871 c, 1875c) described 30 Palaearctic, seven Oriental, four Neotropical and one Afrotropical nominal species: 22 are currently considered as valid, 20 are junior synonyms ( Foote 1967, 1984, Hardy 1977, 1986, Cogan & Munro 1980, White & Maquardt 1989, Merz 1992, 1994, Belcari et al. 1995b, Norrbom et al. 1999, Hancock 2012, Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1868b, 1871b) proposed one new replacement and two new substitute names for a species previously described and named by other authors. Allen Norrbom, A. Freidberg and J. Kinkorova examined some MZUF type material without publishing any results. Dipterists who have examined the type material in the MZUF and designated lectotypes are: Steyskal (1979) for Urophora sybinata Rondani, 1870 , White & Clements (1987) for Urophora jaculata Rondani, 1870 , White (1989) for Tripeta syllibi Rondani, 1870 , Korneyev (1990) for Oxyna grandinata Rondani, 1870 and Merz (1992) for Tephritis divisa Rondani, 1871 and Tephritis separata Rondani, 1871 . Here, we designate a lectotype for Tephritis decipiens Rondani, 1871 , Tephritis matutina Rondani, 1871 , Themara hirtipes Rondani, 1875 , Urophora lejura Rondani, 1870 , Urophora venabulata Rondani, 1870 , Urophora veruata Rondani, 1870 . Except for the type material of Trypeta steropea , which is presumed lost, the type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is distributed among the MZUF (31), MSNG (six), MRSN (four), MZUN (one) and MZLU (one).
