ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 179 (key), 181 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus subapenninis dictionis parmensis [ Parmese sub-Apennine hills ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype (missing left mid-leg) ( MZUF: Box 6): Pipiza Mgn / plana Rnd. , ♀ / 317.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Pipiza noctiluca (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Peck 1988: 88, Belcari et al. 1995a: 11).

REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 181) described Pipiza plana from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length: “ Rarissimo lecta foemina [The female rarely collected]”. We found one syntype in this study.
