Tachinidae View in CoL View at ENA
With more than 9700 species, and many more still to be described, this is one of the most speciose of Diptera families ( Marshall 2012, Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1843a, 1845d, 1846a, 1847 c, 1848b, 1850 c, 1851, 1856, 1857, 1859b, 1861b, 1861 c, 1861d, 1861e, 1862 c, 1862d, 1863, 1865 c, 1868a, 1868b, 1868d, 1870b, 1872b, 1873e, 1875c) described more species in this family (271) than any other: 245 Palaearctic, 21 Neotropical, two Australian, one Afrotropical, one Oriental nominal species and one without any indication of the type locality: 86 are currently considered as valid, 176 are junior synonyms and eight as doubtful or are not included in any recent catalog ( Herting 1969, Guimarães 1971, Crosskey 1977, 1980, Andersen 1988, Cantrell & Crosskey 1989, Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993, Pape et al. 1995, Andersen 1996, O’Hara & Wood 2004, O’Hara et al. 2009, Cerretti 2010, Nunez & Couri 2011, Cerretti & Tschorsnig 2012, Nihei 2016, O’Hara & Cerretti 2016, Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Of the 271 described, 145 appear in the two volumes of his Prodromus devoted to Tachinidae ( Rondani 1859b, 1861e). He proposed eight names in synonymy and not made available by use as a valid species before 1961 ( Rondani 1843d, 1856, 1859b, 1861e, 1862c), and listed eight nomina nuda ( Rondani 1861e, 1862b, 1873a, 1873b, 1873d, 1877a). Additionally, he proposed another three replacement and ten substitute names for species previously described and named by other authors ( Rondani 1843a, 1848b, 1856, 1859b, 1861b, 1861d, 1861e, 1865, 1868d). In his paper on the Rondani types at MZUB, Morge (1959b) listed 38 unpublished names (all nomina nuda ) of Rondani. Macquart (1848), Herting (1969) and Cerretti (2010) incorrectly attributed three species to Rondani. Dipterists who have examined the type material in the MZUF and designated lectotypes are: Herting (1969) for Thryptocera palpalis Rondani, 1859 , Herting (1975) for Nemorilla amica Rondani, 1859 and Phytomyptera unicolor Rondani, 1865 , Andersen (1996) for Siphona pauciseta Rondani, 1865 , Cerretti (2004) for Phorocera cilipeda Rondani, 1859 , Cerretti & Tschorsnig (2012) for Deximorpha marittima Rondani, 1862 and for Zeuxia bohemani Rondani, 1862 and Cerretti et al. (2014) for Thrychogena brevifrons Rondani, 1856 . Here, we designate a lectotype for Exorista noctuicida Rondani, 1859 and Phoricheta lacrimans Rondani, 1861 . Except for the type material of 15 nominal species, which are presumed lost, the type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is distributed among the MZUF (223), MSNC (76), MSNPV (40), OUMNH (19), MZUB (17), MRSN (13), MZUN (11), MNHN (three), MSNG (two), MHNL (two), NHRS (one) and MZLU (one).
