Tabanus punctum Rondani, 1848 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1848b: 105.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Brasile [ Brazil]” ( Rondani 1848b: 63); [Belem (Pará), Brazil] ( Papavero 1973: 343). See Remarks.

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Tabanidei—Gen. Tabanus ): Tabanus punctum Rnd. , Brasile / M. Zool. N° 10919 / probable type of T. punctum Rond., G.B. Fairchild 1964 ; 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Tabanidei—Gen. Tabanus ): no label.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Tabanus olivaceiventris Macquart, 1847 ( Fairchild 1971: 98, Coscarón & Papavero 2009: 138).

REMARKS: Rondani (1848b: 105) described both sexes of Tabanus punctum without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths, from material collected in South America by V. Ghiliani. Costa (1866: 38) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “890”. Philip (1965a: 121) and Fairchild (1971: 98) reported the “ syntypes ♂ ♀ ” in the MZUN. We also found two syntypes in this study. Although Rondani (1848b: 63) only gave the type locality as “ Brasile ”, Papavero (1973: 343) gave a more accurate type locality based on a note in Spinola (1853) that said all specimens collected by Ghiliani in 1846 were collected in Belem, Pará, Brazil.
