Diabasis varipes Rondani, 1848 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1848b: 105.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Brasile [ Brazil]” ( Rondani 1848b: 63); [Belem (Pará), Brazil] ( Papavero 1973: 343). See Remarks.

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype (very dirty, left wing glued to the body) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Tabanidei - Gen. Agelanius a Coenura ): Diabasis varipes Rnd. , Brasile / M. Zool. N° 10940 / Syn. Diachlorus conspicuus Lut. , det. C.B. Philip, 1957.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Diachlorus varipes View in CoL ( Fairchild 1971: 53, Coscarón & Papavero 2009: 81).

REMARKS: Rondani (1848b: 105) described Diabasis varipes , without specifying either the number or the sex of the specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material collected in South America by V. Ghiliani. Costa (1866: 39) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “906”. Philip (1965a: 120) and Fairchild (1971: 39) reported a single type specimen (♀) in the MZUN. We also found one syntype in this study. Although Rondani (1848b: 63) only gave the type locality as “ Brasile ”, Papavero (1973: 343) gave a more accurate type locality based on a note in Spinola (1853) that said all specimens collected by Ghiliani in 1846 were collected in Belem, Pará, Brazil.
