ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 81.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Porto ricco [ Puerto Rico]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype (very damaged, missing right wing) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Tabanidei - Gen. Agelanius a Coenura ): Chrysops amazonius Rnd., Amazonia / M. Zool. N° 10946 / Chrysops variegata ♀ De Gr. , det. C.B. Philip, 1957.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Chrysops variegatus (De Geer, 1776) View in CoL ( Fairchild 1971: 35, Coscarón & Papavero 2009: 16).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 81) described Chrysops amazonius without specifying either the number or the sex of the specimens, from material received from M. Spinola. Costa (1866: 39) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “903”. Philip (1965a: 121) and Fairchild (1971: 39) reported a single type specimen (♀) in the MZUN. We also found one syntype in this study.
