ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1865a: 128.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus sub-appenninis [sub-Apennine hills ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (covered with mold, missing left mid-leg) ( MZUF: Box 1): Volucella Gffr. / adulterina Rndn., Apenn. [= Apennines] / 26.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Volucella bombylans (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Peck 1988: 128) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1865a: 128) described Volucella adulterina from just the male sex, without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens. We found one syntype in this study.
