Syrphus vertebratus Rondani, 1863 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863:10.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Chiliae [ Chile]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Sirfidei - Gen. Xylota a Conops ): Syrphus vertebratus Rnd., Amer. mer. [= South America] / M. Zool. N° 11268 / ♂; 1 ♀, syntype (covered with mold) ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Sirfidei - Gen. Xylota a Conops ): ♀.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Toxomerus vertebratus ( Thompson et al. 1976: 40) View in CoL .

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 10) described both sexes of Syrphus vertebratus without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received from R.A. Philippi, to whom he attributed the species name. Costa (1866: 31) listed a single MZUN specimen (as “ Syrphus vertebratus ” Phil. Rond. ) numbered “649”. We found two syntypes in this study. Thompson & Thompson (2007: 329) wrongly stated that the types of S. vertebratus Rondani were lost.
