ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1875c: 421.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Insula Bonae Fortunae (Borneo) , Provincia Sarawak [ Bona Fortuna Island , Sarawak Province, Borneo]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, holotype ( MSNG): Sarawak / Volucella trifasciata Wdm .

CURRENT STATUS: Knutson et al. (1975) and O’Hara et al. (2011) did not list it; junior synonym of Volucella decorata Walker, 1859 ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020).

REMARKS: Rondani (1875c: 421) mentioned this nominal species in his redescription of Volucella trifasciata Wiedemann, 1830 : “ Quibus differentiis si constantibus, sp. nostra diversa et vocanda trizonata ” [with these differences, if constant, our species is different and named trizonata ]. Rondani described Volucella trizonata from a single female: “ ♀. Diagnosis ista Wiedmani [sic!] convenit exemplari a me observato ” [this description of Wiedemann fits the specimen observed by me].
