Exorista confundens Rondani, 1859 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1859b: 120 (key), 138 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus agri parmensis [ Parmese hills ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 3 ♂♂, syntypes (one missing left fore- and hind-legs; slightly covered with mold) ( MZUF: Box 13): Exorista Mgn / confundens Rnd. / 642; 1 specimen, syntype (sex not determinable, missing both mid- and right hind-legs) ( MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Exorista confundens R. 381 Parma / Coll. Rondani, scatola n° 5, posiz. B-2 / Museo di Storia Naturale Università di Pisa, Calci ( PI) ex collezione Rondani.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Senometopia confundens ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 218, Pape et al. 1995: 21, Cerretti 2010: 224; O’Hara et al. 2020: 352).

REMARKS: Rondani (1859b: 138) described Exorista confundens from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length: “ Lecta mascula tantum pauca [Only a few males collected]”. Herting (1969: 190, 193) reported two males in the MZUF and excluded two MZUF females numbered “642” from the type series because of its sex. We found four syntypes in this study: three males in the MZUF and one specimen (sex not determinable) in the MSNC.
