Sarcophaga nurus Rondani, 1861 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1861g: 383 (key), 392 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: Meigen (1826: 38) gave no locality in his redescription of Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis ( Fallén, 1817) , but presumably it is Europe because the work deals with European species; “ Environs de Lille [near Lille ( France)]” ( Macquart 1834b: 181) [locality for Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis ( Fallén, 1817) sensu Macquart (1834) ]; “ Dans toute l’Europe [in all Europe]” ( Macquart 1835: 224) [locality for Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis ( Fallén, 1817) sensu Macquart (1835) ].
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 specimen, syntype (sex not determinable, missing head and both hind-legs, abdomen eaten by dermestids) ( MHNL: Macquart’s collection): Sarcophaga / Myophora Rob. D. / Anus ruber [red anus] / S. haemorrhoidalis F.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Bercaea cruentata ( Meigen, 1826) ( Verves 1986: 160) ; junior synonym of Sarcophaga cruentata Meigen, 1826 ( Pape 1988: 12) View in CoL ; junior synonym of Sarcophaga (Bercaea) africa ( Wiedemann, 1824) View in CoL ( Pape 1996: 302; Krčmar et al. 2019: 122).
REMARKS: Rondani (1861g: 392) proposed Sarcophaga nurus for Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis ( Fallén, 1817) sensu Meigen (1826: 38) and sensu Macquart (1834b: 181, 1835: 224), which he considered a new species. Rondani referred to Meigen’s and Macquart’s redescriptions of Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis , which were based on an unspecified number of specimens, without adding any additional details: “ Haemorrhoidalis [sic!] Meig. Macq. (non Fall. nec Zett.). Confer descriptiones Haemorrhoidalis [sic!] Meigenii et Zetterst. [ S. haemorrhoidalis sensu Meigen and Macquart (not Fallén or Zetterstedt). Compare the description of S. haemorrhoidalis given by Meigen and Zetterstedt]”. So, the types for Sarcophaga nurus Rondani should be in Meigen’s and Macquart’s collections. No specimen labeled as Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis is present in Meigen’s collection in the MNHN (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 2020), while one specimen is preserved in Macquart’s collection in the MHNL (O. Boilly, pers. comm., May 2019). There are ten males and five females of Sarcophaga nurus in the MZUF (Box: 19 and F), one male in the OUMNH (Box: 7), one male and one female in the MSNC, which did not belong to the type series. Pape (1988: 12) incorrectly designated a lectotype (♂) and paralectotypes (8 ♂♂, 2 ♀♀ pinned with a conspecific male) in the MZUF and reported finding only two of the three pairs pinned together that were mentioned by Böttcher (1913: 193).
