TYPE LOCALITY: “ In collibus sub apenninis [sub-Apennine hills ( Italy)]”.

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, lectotype ( MZUF: Box 14): Sphixapata Rndn. / penicillaris Rnd. , ♂ / 727 / lectotype ♂ Sphixapata penicillaris Rndn., T. Pape det., 1986 / Pterella penicillaris (R.), T. Pape det., 1986.

PARALECTOTYPES EXAMINED: 2 ♂♂ (one missing head and fore-legs, the other reduced to fragments) ( MZUF: Box 14) : Sphixapata Rndn. / penicillaris Rnd. , ♂ / 727 / paralectotype; 3 ♀♀ ( MZUF: Box 14) : Sphixapata Rndn. / penicillaris Rnd. , ♀, intricata / 727 / paralectotype.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Pterella penicillaris View in CoL ( Verves 1986: 84, Pape 1988: 12, Pape et al. 1995: 12, Pape 1996: 133, Povolný & Verves 1997: 68).

REMARKS: Rondani (1865c: 216) described both sexes of Sphixapata penicillaris without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens. Pape (1988: 12) designated a lectotype (♂) and paralectotypes (2 ♂♂, 3 ♀♀).
