ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1859b: 224 (key), 228 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ tam in planitie, quam in montuosis agri parmensis [Parmese plains and mountains ( Italy)]”.

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, lectotype (pinned with a conspecific female), 1 ♀, paralectotype ( MZUF: Box 14): Sphixapata Rndn. / pelopei Rnd. , ♂ / 719 / lectotype Sphixapata pelopei Rndn., T. Pape det., 1986 / Amobia pelopei (Rnd.) , T. Pape, 1986.

PARALECTOTYPES EXAMINED: 2 ♂♂ (moldy), 2 ♀♀ (one with its puparium) ( MZUF: Box 14): Sphixapata Rndn. / pelopei Rnd. / 719 / paralectotype .

PARALECTOTYPES NOT EXAMINED: 1 ♂ (MZUF: Box D): Sphixapata pelopei R., 276, ♂, Parma / 393 276; 1 ♂ (in poor condition, only part of thorax and both wings remain) (MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Sphixapata pelopei Rnd. 96 ♂ Parma / Coll. CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Amobia pelopei View in CoL ( Verves 1986: 61, Pape 1988: 12, Pape et al. 1995: 11, Pape 1996: 74, Povolný & Verves 1997: 84; Krčmar et al. 2019: 103).

REMARKS: Rondani (1859b: 228) described both sexes of Sphixapata pelopei without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths, but presumably from more than one specimen because he wrote: “ non rara [not rare]”. Pape (1988: 12) designated a lectotype (♂) and paralectotypes (2 ♂♂, 3 ♀♀) but did not mention an additional three specimens: one male in the MZUF, one male in the MSNC, and one female in the MSNPV (all are paralectotypes).
