Syrphidae View in CoL View at ENA
This worldwide family of non-schizophoran Cyclorrhapha contains almost 6,400 species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani was particularly interested in this family: some of his first publications deal with the Italian species of Callicera Panzer, 1809 ( Rondani 1844a) , Chrysotoxum Meigen, 1803 ( Rondani 1845e) , Merodon Meigen, 1803 ( Rondani 1845f) , and Eumerus Meigen 1822 ( Rondani 1850a) . He described 114 Palaearctic, 30 Neotropical, four Oriental, and two Afrotropical nominal species ( Rondani 1843b, 1844a, 1844b, 1845a, 1845e, 1845f, 1846 c, 1847d, 1848b, 1850a, 1850b, 1850 c, 1851, 1856, 1857, 1860 c, 1863, 1865a, 1868a, 1868b, 1868d, 1873e, 1875c), 50 of which were proposed in his Prodromus ( Rondani 1857) . He proposed four new replacement, and eight substitute names for species previously described and named by other authors ( Rondani 1845a, 1845f, 1847d, 1851, 1856, 1857, 1863, 1868a). He also proposed five names in synonymy and not made available by use as a valid species before 1961; and three nomina nuda ( Rondani 1844b, 1850a, 1857, 1865a). Fifty-one species are currently considered as valid, 99 are junior synonyms ( Goot 1964, Vockeroth 1971, Knutson et al. 1975, Thompson et al. 1976, Smith & Vockeroth 1980, Dušek & Láska 1985, Peck 1988, Hippa 1990, Speight 1991, Vockeroth 1992, Hurkmans 1993, Claussen et al. 1994, Maibach et al. 1994, Belcari et al. 1995a, Claussen & Thompson 1996, Doczkal & Vujić 1998, Mazánek et al. 1998, Speight et al. 1998, Claussen & Speight 1999, Steenis 2000, Hippa et al. 2001, Radenković et al. 2002, Sommaggio 2002, Lyneborg & Barkemeyer 2005, Sommaggio 2007, Smit & Vujić 2008, Milankov et al. 2008, Borges & Couri 2009, Mengual et al. 2009, Speight & Sommaggio 2010, Steenis & Lucas 2011, Thompson 2012, Reemer & Ståhls 2013, Haarto & Ståhls 2014, Steenis et. al. 2016, 2017, Nedeljković et al. 2018, Grković et al. 2019, Thompson, 2019, Evenhuis & Pape 2020). In his paper on the Rondani types at MZUB, Morge (1959b) listed four unpublished Rondani names (nomina nuda ). Dipterists who have examined the type material in the MZUF and designated lectotypes are: Dušek & Láska (1976) for Syrphus flaviceps Rondani, 1857 , Speight (1991) for Callicera macquartii Rondani, 1844 and Callicera roserii Rondani, 1844 , Hurkmans (1993) for Merodon canipilus Rondani, 1865 , Maibach et al. (1994) for Chrysogaster virgo Rondani, 1865 and Melanogaster nubilis Rondani, 1857 , Claussen & Thompson (1996) for Cheilosia erythrostoma Rondani, 1868 , Cheilosia fuscicornis Rondani, 1865 , Cheilosia honesta Rondani 1868 , Cheilosia pusilla Rondani 1857 , Cheilosia subalpina Rondani 1857 , Cheilosia superciliata Rondani 1868 , Claussen & Speight (1999) for Cheilosia glirina Rondani, 1857 , Steenis (2000) for Milesia manicata Rondani, 1865 and Milesia digitata Rondani, 1865 , Sommaggio (2002) for Paragus tarsatus Rondani, 1857 , Smit & Vujić (2008) for Psilota innupta Rondani, 1857 , Speight & Sommaggio (2010) for Syrphus dives Rondani, 1857 , Vujić et al. (2012) for Merodon armipes Rondani, 1844 . Dipterists who have examined the type material in the MRSN and designated lectotypes are: Sommaggio (2007) for Eumerus bicolor Rondani, 1857 and Thompson (2019) for Eristalis nili Rondani, 1850 and Syrphus albitarsis Rondani, 1850 . Dušek & Láska (1985) designate a lectotype for Lasiopthicus dignotus Rondani, 1857 in the MNHUB. Here, we designate a lectotype for Eumerus tuberculatus Rondani, 1857 , Merodon varius Rondani, 1845 , Paragus mundus Wollaston, 1858 , Pipizella neuphritica Rondani, 1868 . Dipterists who have examined the MZUF type material without publishing any lectotype designation are: M. Daccordi (all the species), C.F. Kassebeer ( Syrphus dives Rondani, 1857 and Lasiopthicus novus Rondani, 1857 ), M.A. Marcos Garcia ( Syrphus flaviceps Rondani, 1857 and Psilota innupta Rondani, 1857 ), Z. Nedeljković ( Chrysotoxum alpinum Rondani, 1865 and some species of Eumerus ), T. Nielsen ( Platycheirus Le Peletier & Audinet-Serville, 1828 ), S. Radenković ( Paragus tacchettii Rondani, 1865 and some species of Merodon ), and A. Vujić (some species of Merodon ). Except for the type material of 15 nominal species, which are presumed lost, the type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is distributed among the MZUF (92), MSNC (22), MZUN (22), MZUB (13), MSNPV (11), MRSN (eight), OUMNH (seven), MSNG (six), MNHUB (one) and NHMW (one).
