ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1844a: 64 (key), 66 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus ditionis Parmensis [Parmese hills ( Italy)]”.

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, lectotype ( MZUF: Box B): Callicera macquartii R., 131, ♀, Parma / 393 131 / lectotype .

PARALECTOTYPE NOT EXAMINED: 1 ♀ ( MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Callicera macquartii Rnd. ♀ Parma / Coll. Rondani, scatola n° 4, posiz. CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Callicera rufa Schummel, 1842 ( Peck 1988: 126) View in CoL ; valid species, as Callicera macquarti [sic!] ( Speight 1991: 11, Belcari et al. 1995a: 13).

REMARKS: Rondani (1844a: 66) described both sexes of Callicera macquartii without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths: “ foeminae sex a me lectae fuerunt, mas vero semel captus [six females were collected by me, the male collected only once]”. Rondani (1843g: 375) proposed Callicera macquartii as new but without any description. Speight (1991: 11) designated a lectotype (♀) but did not mention an additional two females: one in the MSNC and one in the MZUB (both of these additional specimens are paralectotypes). The male type has presumably been lost.
