ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 40 (key), 43 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ ex alpibus pedemontanis … a Tiguro [Piedmont ( Italy) Alps … Tigurum (= Zurich, Switzerland)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 3 ♂♂, syntypes (one missing abdomen; one covered with mold and missing hind-legs; one partially eaten by dermestids, covered with mold, missing left hind-leg) ( MZUF: Box 2): Eristalis Fab. / saltuum Rndn., Alpi / 39.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Eristalis nigritarsis Macquart, 1834 View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 188, Belcari et al. 1995a: 17); junior synonym of Eristalis cryptarum ( Fabricius, 1794) ( Hippa et al. 2001: 298) View in CoL .
REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 43) described both sexes of Eristalis saltuum without specifying either the number of or the length of the specimens: “ Marem bis obtinui ex alpibus pedemontanis, una vice a D. Truqui altera a Prof. Bellardi. Foeminam a Tiguro D. Bremi misit ” [I obtained the male twice from the Piedmont Alps, once from Dr. Truqui, the second time from Prof. Bellardi. Dr. Bremi sent the female from Tigurum]”. We found three male syntypes in this study. The female was not found in this study and is presumed lost.
