Eristalis funereus Rondani, 1851 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1851: 358.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ regioni equatoriali dell’America, principalmente nelle vicinanze del Rio Napo [Equatorial regions of (South) America, mainly in the vicinity of Napo River]” ( Rondani 1851: 357).

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Sirfidei - Gen. Dolichomerus a Meromacrus ): Eristalomya funerea Rnd. , Perù / M. Zool. N° 11243/ ♀.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Palpada funerea ( Thompson et al. 1976: 106) View in CoL .

REMARKS: Rondani (1851: 358) described Eristalis funereus from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material collected by Osculati (1850) during his journey through equatorial South America. Osculati (1850: 240) named but did not describe the species. Costa (1866: 31) listed a single MZUN specimen (as “ Eristalomyia funerea ”) numbered “626”. We also found one syntype in this study. Leonardi et al. (1995: 148) and Mazzotti (2011: 166) reported the Osculati collection in Milan as destroyed.
