Chrysotoxum italicum Rondani, 1845 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1845e: 195 (key), 196 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: Rossi (1790: 287) gave no type locality in the redescription of Syrphus arcuatus (Linnaeus, 1758) , but presumably it is Tuscany ( Italy) because the work deals with insects “ in provinciis Florentina et Pisana collegit [collected in provinces of Florence and Pisa]”; “ in Italia centrali … in Italia media et meridionali [central and south Italy]” ( Rondani 1845e: 196) [type locality for Chrysotoxum italicum Rondani, 1845 ].

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (missing head) ( MZUF: Box 7): Chrysotoxum Mgn / italicum Rnd. , ♂ / 359 / Chrysotoxum intermedium (= italicum Rnd. ) det. M. Daccordi 1985; 3 ♂♂, syntype (two missing head) ( MZUF: Box 7): Chrysotoxum Mgn / italicum Rnd. , ♂ / 359; 3 ♀♀, syntypes ( MZUF: Box 7): Chrysotoxum Mgn / italicum Rnd. , ♀ / 359; 1 ♂, syntype, 1 ♀, syntype (abdomen eaten by dermestids) ( MZUF: Box B): Chrysotoxum italicum R., 121, ♂ ♀, Parma / 393 121; 1 ♂, syntype ( MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Chrysotoxum Latr. italicum Rnd. ♂ ♀ Parma / Coll. Rondani, scatola n° 4, posiz. C-17 / Museo di Storia Naturale Università di Pisa, Calci ( PI) ex collezione Rondani; 1 ♀, syntype (missing head and both fore-legs) ( MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Chrysotoxum italicum Rnd. ♀ Parm. / Coll. Rondani, scatola n° 4, posiz. C-18 / Museo di Storia Naturale Università di Pisa, Calci ( PI) ex collezione Rondani; 1 ♂, syntype ( MZUB, Box 322): 21 33 / Chrysotoxum italicum Rond. , ex a. parmensi / italicum Rndn. , ♂ ♀, Parma; 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUB, Box 322): 21 34 / Chrysotoxum italicum Rond. , ex a. parmensi; 1 ♂, syntype ( OUMNH Verrall-Collin Coll.: Box 39): syntype / Rondani Typ. / sec. typ. Rondanii / C. italicum Ex. Coll. Kow. / italicum .

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Chrysotoxum intermedium Meigen, 1822 View in CoL ( Peck 1988: 60, Belcari et al. 1995a: 9).

REMARKS: Rondani (1845e: 196) proposed Chrysotoxum italicum for Syrphus arcuatus (Linnaeus, 1758) sensu Rossi (1790: 287) , which he considered a new species. Rondani referred to Rossi’s redescription of Syrphus arcuatus , which was based on an unspecified number of specimens, and to an unspecified number of specimens in his collection. Therefore, the type material should be in the collections of Rossi and Rondani. According to Poggi & Conci (1996: 100) and Horn et al. (1990: 333) Rossi’s collection should be in the MNHUB. Fourteen syntypes were found in this study. No specimen under the name Syrphus arcuatus is present in the MNHUB (J. Pohl, pers. comm., December 2019).
