Chrysotoxum tricinctum Rondani, 1845

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1845e: 196 (key), 201 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: Rossi (1790: 287) gave no type locality in the redescription of Syrphus bicinctus (Linnaeus, 1758) , but presumably it is Tuscany ( Italy) because the work deals with insects “ in provinciis Florentina et Pisana collegit [collected in provinces of Florence and Pisa]”; “ in agri Parmensis collibus subapenninis [Parmese sub- Apennine hills ( Italy)]” ( Rondani 1845e: 201) [type locality for Chrysotoxum tricinctum Rondani, 1845 ].

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♀♀, syntypes ( MZUF: Box 7): Chrysotoxum Mgn / tricinctum Rnd. v. bicincti ? ♀ / 349; 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUF: Box B): Chrysotoxum tricinctum R., 127, ♂ ♀, Parma / 393 127; 1 ♀, syntype (missing head) ( MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Chrysotoxum tricinctum Rnd. ♀ Parm. / Coll. Rondani, scatola n° 4, posiz. D-9 / Museo di Storia Naturale Università di Pisa, Calci ( PI) ex collezione Rondani; 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUB, Box 322): 21 43 / Chrysotoxum tricinctum Rond. , ex a. parmensi.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Chrysotoxum bicinctum (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Peck 1988: 57, Belcari et al. 1995a: 9).

REMARKS: Rondani (1845e: 201) proposed Chrysotoxum tricinctum for Syrphus bicinctus (Linnaeus, 1758) sensu Rossi (1790: 287) , which he considered a new species. Rondani referred to Rossi’s redescription of Syrphus bicinctus , which were based on an unspecified number of specimens, and to five females in his collection: “ quinque tantum feminae hujus speciei … sed mares numquam [only five females of this species … but never the male]”. Therefore, the type material should be in the collections of Rossi and Rondani. According to Poggi & Conci (1996: 100) and Horn et al. (1990: 333), Rossi’s collection should be in the MNHUB. We found five syntypes in this study. No specimen under the name Syrphus bicinctus is present in the MNHUB (J. Pohl, pers. comm., December 2019). Not included in the type series are five males because of their sex: three in the MZUF (Box 7 and Box B), one in the MSNC, one in the MSNPV and one in the MZUB.
