ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 110 (key), 117 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Insula Melita [ Malta Island]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♂♂, syntypes (both missing right mid-legs) ( MZUF: Box 24): Spilogaster Mcqrt / obsignata Rnd. , Malta, Sicil. / 1309; 1 ♀, syntype (missing right fore- and hind-legs) ( MZUF: Box 24): Spilogaster Mcqrt / obsignata Rnd. , Malta / 1309 / Sicil.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Limnophora obsignata View in CoL ( Pont 1986b: 180, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 15).

REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 117) described both sexes of Spilogaster obsignata without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received by A. Schembri. We found three syntypes in this study.
