Spilogaster cothurnata Rondani, 1866 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 110 (key), 116 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in agro parmensi . … ab Etruria [ Parmese territory … Etruria (= Tuscany) ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype (fore-legs and abdomen in a microvial pinned below specimen) ( MZUF: Box 24): Spilogaster Mcqrt / cothurnata Rnd., Etrur. [= Etruria (Tuscany) ] / 1306; 1 ♂, syntype (missing head, both fore- right mid- and left hind-legs, thorax and abdomen partially eaten by dermestids) ( MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Spylogaster cothurnata R. 477 ♂ Parma / Coll. Rondani, scatola n° 6, posiz. B-7 / Museo di Storia Naturale Università di Pisa, Calci ( PI) ex collezione Rondani.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Helina cothurnata ( Pont 1986b: 140, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 13).

REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 116) described Spilogaster cothurnata from two males: “ semel masculum inveni … et aliud misit … doct. Piccioli [I found the male … and Dr. Piccioli sent the other]”. He later ( Rondani 1877c: 95) described the female sex. We found two syntypes in this study. An additional four specimens in the MZUF: three females numbered “1306” are not included in the type series because of their sex; and a male numbered “1306” from “Varal” [= Varallo (= Vercelli, Italy)], which is not the type locality.
