Musca frontalis Rondani, 1868 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1868a: 51.
TYPE LOCALITY: “Paris” ( Robineau-Desvoidy 1830: 396) [type locality for Musca aurifacies Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 ].
TYPE MATERIAL: see Remarks.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Musca domestica Linnaeus, 1758 ( Pont 1986b: 91, Thompson & Pont 1994: 77); junior primary homonym of Musca frontalis Latreille, 1802 ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020).
REMARKS: Rondani (1868a: 51) considered the males of Musca aurifacies Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 and the females of Musca campestris Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 as belonging to the same species but, instead of applying the Principle of Priority, incorrectly proposed the substitute name Musca frontalis . It is considered as a synonym of M. aurifacies Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 by Bezzi & Stein (1907: 602) and of Musca domestica Linnaeus, 1758 by Pont (1986b: 91) and Thompson & Pont (1994: 77) but never as a valid species. The type material for M. frontalis will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i. e., Musca aurifacies . There is no type of Musca aurifacies in the MNHN where the Robineau-Desvoidy’s collection is preserved (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 2020).
