ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1869a: 32 (key), 34 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Apennino parmensi [Parmese Apennines ( Italy)]”.

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, lectotype (abdomen and terminalia on a slide, missing left wing) ( MZUF: Box 31): Megaglossa Rnd. Platystoma / corticarum Rndn., Apenn. [= Apennines] / 1623 / Lectotypus [not designated] Megaglossa corticarum Rnd. , design. Á. Soós, 1978.

PARALECTOTYPES NOT EXAMINED: 2 ♂♂ ( MZUF: Box 31): Megaglossa Rnd. Platystoma / corticarum Rndn., Apenn. [= Apennines] / 1623 / Paralectotypus [not designated] Megaglossa corticarum Rnd. , design. Á. Soós, 1978.

CURRENT STATUS: subspecies of Platystoma insularum (Rondani, 1869) ( Soós 1984b: 41) View in CoL .

REMARKS: Rondani (1869a: 34) described Megaglossa corticarum from just the male sex, without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens. Árpád Soós examined the MZUF collection and labeled one male as lectotype without ever formally publishing the designation. Rivosecchi (2000: 170, 175) provided a drawing of Megaglossa corticarum ’s terminalia, indicating it as the lectotype designated by Soós. Rivosecchi unambiguously identified the type (the male with terminalia dissected), which therefore must be considered as the lectotype (I.C.Z.N. 1999: Article 74.5). Rivosecchi (2000) did not mention an additional two syntype specimens in the MZUF (both these specimens are paralectotypes).
