This family is believed to contain around 30,000 species, of which only a fraction (4,500) has been described ( Marshall 2012, Evenhuis & Pape 2020). In his Prodromus of Diptera genera, Rondani (1856) described three Palaearctic nominal species, one considered as valid and two as junior synonyms ( Disney 1991, Belcari et al. 1995a). Gori (1999) examined the type material in the MZUF and MZUB, designating one lectotype for Palpimega nivalis Rondani 1856 in the MZUF. In his paper on the Rondani collection at MZUB, Morge (1959b) listed four unpublished names (nomina nuda ) of Rondani. The type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is in the MZUF (three), MZUB (two) and OUMNH (two).
