ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1875a: 248 (key), 249 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ prope Parmam [near Parma (Italy) ]”.
TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♂♂, syntypes ( MZUF: Box 34): Piophila Fall. / melanocera n. / 1779.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Piophila casei (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Zuska 1984: 238) .
REMARKS: Rondani (1875a: 249) described Piophila melanocera from more than one specimen without specifying either their number or sex: “ Bis tantum a me lecta … in cadaveribus equinis [collected twice … in the bodies of dead horses]”. We found two syntypes in this study.
