This family of calyptrate flies contains 382 predominantly tropical species ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020). It is unknown in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions ( Marshall 2012). Rondani (1861e, 1865 c, 1873e, 1875c) described two Palaearctic, two Oriental, and one Afrotropical species in his “ Stirps Stomoxidinae ”. The family Rhiniidae was proposed by Brauer & Bergenstamm (1889). One nominal species is currently considered as valid, four as junior synonyms ( James 1977, Pont 1980 b, Schumann 1986, Pape et al. 1995). The type material is distributed between the MZUF (Palaearctic) and the MSNG (Oriental and Afrotropical).
