Cecidomyia frumentaria Rondani, 1864b: 189
status

Cecidomyia frumentaria Rondani, 1864b: 189 View in CoL .

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1864b: 189.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ territorio Parmigiano [Parmese territory ( Italy)]” ( Rondani 1843c: 159) [type locality for Phytophaga cerealis Rondani, 1843 ] .

TYPE MATERIAL: see Remarks.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Mayetiola destructor (Say, 1817) View in CoL ( Skuhravá 1986: 185, Dahl et al. 1995: 29 (as frumentosa), Gagné 2010: 294, Gagné & Jaschhof 2017: 399).

REMARKS: Rondani (1864b: 189) proposed the substitute name Cecidomyia frumentaria for Phytophaga cerealis Rondani, 1843 without any explanation. Rondani (1865b: 151, 1866b: 21, 23, 1866c: 189) used the name Cecidomyia frumentaria instead of Phytophaga cerealis . Arcangeli (1883: 87) treated Cecidomyia frumentaria as a valid species while Kertész (1903: 222), Skuhravá (1986: 185) and Gagné & Solinas (1996: 73) considered it as a synonym of Mayetiola destructor (Say, 1817) . The type material for Cecidomyia frumentaria will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i.e., Phytophaga cerealis . Dahl et al. (1995: 29) incorrectly listed this nominal species as “ frumentosa ” here considered as a subsequent incorrect spelling.
