Mya versicolor Rondani, 1850

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1850c: 175.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Venezuela ” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype ( MRSN: Box 1755): Mya Rndn. Calliphora alior versicolor Rndn. , Venezuela / Mya versicolor Rond. 1850: 175 , Venezuela.

CURRENT STATUS: James (1970), Mac-Lean & González (2006), Kosmann et al. (2013) and Velásquez et al. (2017) did not list it; available name ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 215).

REMARKS: Rondani (1850c: 175) described Mya versicolor , without specifying either the number or the sex of the specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received from E. Truqui. Osculati (1850: 240) named but did not describe the species. According to Papavero (1973: 343–347), Osculati never collected in Venezuela, so the type material must have been collected by someone other than Osculati. One year later, Rondani (1851: 365) redescribed the species, among others in the paper that were from Osculati’s collecting. Costa (1866: 33) listed a single MZUN specimen (as Somomyia [sic!] versicolor ) numbered “703” from “Rio Napo” [Napo River], which is the one of the localities where Osculati collected, therefore this latter specimen described in Rondani (1851) does not belong to the type material. We found one syntype in this study.
