ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 69.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Region. Caucasicae [Caucasus]”.

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUN: Box Bombilidei B 03, 03): Bombylius senex Rnd, Caucaso / M. Zool. N° 11091 .

CURRENT STATUS: junior primary homonym of Bombylius senex Wiedemann 1820 View in CoL and junior synonym of Bombylius ambustus Wiedemann, 1818 View in CoL ( Zaitzev 1989: 87, Evenhuis & Greathead 1999: 108, 2015: 117).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 69) described Bombylius senex , without specifying either the number or the sex of the specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received from P.J.M. Macquart. Costa (1866: 37) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “852”. Evenhuis & Greathead (1999: 108) could not locate type material. We found one syntype in this study.
