Dalmannia desponsata Rondani, 1857 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 250.
TYPE LOCALITY: Wiedemann (in Meigen, 1824: 153) gave no type locality in the original description of Dalmannia gemina ( Wiedemann, 1824) , but presumably it is Europe because the work deals with European species.
TYPE MATERIAL: see Remarks.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Dalmannia aculeata (Linnaeus, 1761) View in CoL ( Chvála & Smith 1988: 271, Rivosecchi & Scaramozzino 1995: 4, Stuke 2017: 137).
REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 250) considered the males of Dalmannia gemina (Wiedemann in Meigen, 1824) and the females of Dalmannia australis ( Macquart, 1835) and Dalmannia meridionalis Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 as belonging to the same species but, instead of applying the Principle of Priority, incorrectly proposed the substitute name Dalmannia desponsata . Dalmannia desponsata has always been considered as a synonym of Dalmannia aculeata (Linnaeus, 1761) ( Schiner 1861a: 389, Schiner 1864: 112, Bezzi & De Stefani-Perez 1897: 56, Becker 1905: 272, Kröber 1925: 41, Chvála & Smith 1988: 271, Rivosecchi & Scaramozzino 1995: 4, Stuke 2017: 137), never as a valid species. The type material for Dalmannia desponsata will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i. e., Dalmannia gemina . Wiedemann (in Meigen, 1824: 153) reported that the types of Dalmannia gemina are in the Fabrician collection. Michelsen (2017) did not list this nominal species among the Fabrician types in the ZMUC. Stuke (2017: 137) reported that the type depository of Dalmannia gemina is unknown. Under the name Dalmannia desponsata there are a male in the MSNC and two specimens of undetermined sex in the MZUB (all are non-types).
