This worldwide family contains 5,922 species (Evenhuis & Pape 2011), but presumably there are twice that number ( Marshall 2012). Rondani (1860 b, 1969 c, 1875c) described two Palaearctic and one Oriental nominal species, all three considered as valid ( Wirth 1973, Remm 1988, Borkent 2016). Dominiak & Szadziewski (2010) designated a lectotype for Ceratopogon aristolochiae . Rondani, 1860 in the MZUF. Except for the type material of Ceratopogon pictellum Rondani, 1869 , which is presumed lost, the type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is distributed between the MZUF (two) and MSNG (one).
