ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1875b: 167 (key, as Cryptochetum View in CoL ), 172 (description, as Cryptochoetum ).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus subapenninis ditionis parmensis [ Parmese sub-Apennine hills ( Italy)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study. See remarks.
CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Nartshuk 1984a: 67, Canzoneri et al. 1995: 15).
REMARKS: Rondani (1875b: 172) described Cryptochetum grandicorne without specifying either the number or the sex of the specimens and not giving a range of lengths. Only a bare pin bearing the number “1840” is present in the MZUF (Box 35) next to the label “ Cryptochoetum Rndn. grandicorne Rndn., Etrur. [= Etruria (Tuscany) ], Pedem. [= Piedmont]”. The use of Cryptochoetum ( Rondani, 1875b: 172) is an “incorrect original spelling” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 65).
