ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1879: 6 (key), 7 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Emilia [ Emilia (Italy) ]”.

TYPE MATERIAL: 8 ♂♂, 1 ♀, syntypes, 1 specimen, syntype (sex not determinable, missing abdomen) ( MZUF: Box 66): Nycteribia Latr. / ercolanii Rnd. ♂ / 3378 / N. ercolanii Rond. , syn. N. vexata Westw. det. O. Theodor, 1953; 4 ♀♀, syntypes ( MZUF: Box 66): Nycteribia Latr. / ercolanii Rnd. / 3378 / N. ercolanii Rond. , syn. N. vexata Westw. det. O. Theodor, 1953; 1 ♂, syntype (terminalia on a slide in the same Box) ( MZUF: Box 66): N. vexata ♂ Westw. Syn. N. ercolanii Rond. det. Theodor / 3378 / genitalia; 1 ♀, syntype (terminalia on a slide in the same Box) ( MZUF: Box 66): N. vexata ♀ Westw. syn. N. ercolanii Rd. det. Theodor / 3378 / genitalia.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Nycteribia vexata Westwood, 1835 View in CoL ( Hurka & Soós 1986: 229, Pape et al. 1995: 8).

REMARKS: Rondani (1879: 7) described both sexes of Nycteribia ercolanii without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of length received from G.B. Ercolani. We found 16 syntypes in this study.
