Chorthophila sulcans Rondani, 1866 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 157 (key), 164 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ ab insula Melita [ Malta Island]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, holotype ( MZUF: Box 23): Chorthophila Mcq. / sulcans Rnd. , ♀, Melita / 1212 / 171 Malta .

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Fucellia tergina ( Zetterstedt 1845) View in CoL ( Dely-Draskovits 1993: 59, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 7).

REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 164) described Chorthophila sulcans from a single female: “ Foem. … Unicum specimen ab insula Melita misit clar. Schembri [Female. … A single specimen from Malta Island sent by Mr. Schembri]”. Rondani (1866a: 157; 1877c: 199) considered Chorthophila sulcans to have been described by A. Schembri. The MZUF also contains a male (non-type). Hennig (1966: 19) incorrectly designated the MZUF female numbered “1212” as the lectotype. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name Chorthophila , which is an “unjustified emendation of Chortophila Macquart, 1835 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 57).
