This widespread but predominantly Afrotropical and Palaearctic family of Asiloidea bee flies contains nearly 5,000 species ( Evenhuis & Greathead 1999, Marshall 2012, Evenhuis & Pape, 2020). Rondani described 21 Neotropical, seven Palaearctic (only one from Italy) and two Oriental nominal species, all from material received from other collectors and sent to him for identification ( Rondani 1848 b, 1863, 1868b, 1873f, 1875c, 1877a). Rondani did not cover this family in his Prodromus . Twenty-one are currently considered as valid, eight as junior synonyms and one as a senior (but invalid) synonym ( Bowden, 1975, Zaitzev 1989, Contini et al. 1995, Evenhuis & Greathead 1999, 2015). In his paper on the Rondani types at MZUB, Morge (1959b) listed three unpublished names (nomina nuda ) of Rondani. Painter & Painter (1974) examined the MZUN material without publishing any lectotype designation. Except for the type material of Anthrax palumbii , Bombylisoma decorata , Mulio lateralis and Mulio marginalis , which are presumed lost, the type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is distributed among the MZUN (21), MSNG (four) and MZUF (one).
