ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 46.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Brasilia [ Brazil]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, syntype ( MZUN: Box Asilidei A 05, 04): Mallophora scopitarsis Rnd. , Rio Napo / M. Zool. N° 11049 .

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Mallophora macquartii Rondani, 1851 ( Artigas & Angulo, 1980: 77); valid species ( Papavero 2009: 42);

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 46) described Mallophora scopitarsis , without specifying either its sex or length, from material received from V. Ghiliani. Costa (1866: 36) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “802”. Artigas & Angulo (1980: 77) incorrectly concluded that the type for this nominal species was lost. We found one syntype in this study.
