Mallophora cilicrura Rondani, 1851 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1851: 367.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ regioni equatoriali dell’America, principalmente nelle vicinanze del Rio Napo [ Equatorial regions of ( South ) America, mainly in the vicinity of Napo River]” ( Rondani 1851: 357) .

TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Martin & Papavero 1970: 73); junior synonym of Mallophora barbipes (Wiedemann, 1819) View in CoL ( Artigas & Angulo 1980: 40, Papavero 2009: 37).

REMARKS: Rondani (1851: 367) described Mallophora cilicrura , without specifying either the number or the sex of the specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material collected by Osculati (1850) during his journey through equatorial South America. Osculati (1850: 240) named but did not describe the species. Artigas & Angulo (1980: 40) concluded that the type of this nominal species had been lost. Leonardi et al. (1995: 148) and Mazzotti (2011: 166) reported the Osculati collection in Milan as destroyed. Papavero (2009: 37) reported the type material in the MZUN; however, we could not locate any type specimens there in this study.
