With almost 7,500 species, this is one of the richest Diptera families ( Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1846b, 1848b, 1850 c, 1851, 1856, 1863, 1868b, 1873e, 1873f, 1875c) described 25 Neotropical, 11 Oriental, seven Palaearctic, one Afrotropical nominal species and one without any indication of the type locality, mostly from material collected by others and sent to him for identification. Rondani did not cover this family in his Prodromus . Thirty-one species are currently considered as valid but these include unexamined types whose taxonomic position is doubtful ( Martin 1968, Martin & Papavero 1970, Oldroyd 1975, Artigas & Angulo 1980, Oldroyd 1980, Lehr 1988, Scarbrough 1993, Contini et al. 1995, Papavero 2009), two as senior synonyms and 12 as junior synonyms. Rondani (1848 b, 1863) proposed three new replacement names for species previously described and named by P.J.M. Macquart. In his paper on the Rondani types at MZUB, Morge (1959b) listed five unpublished names (nomina nuda ) of Rondani. Scarbrough (1993) designated a lectotype of Ommatius costatus Rondani, 1850 in the MRSN, a collection also examined by N. Papavero who, however, did not formally designate any lectotype. Here, we designate a lectotype for Habropogon doriae Rondani, 1873 , Promacus taeniopus Rondani, 1873 . Except for the type material of six nominal species, which are presumed lost, most of it deriving from the G. Osculati collection in Milan, which Leonardi et al. (1995: 148) and Mazzotti (2011: 166) reported as destroyed, the type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is distributed among the MSNG (15), MZUN (14), MRSN (five), MZUF (two), MNHN (one) and MZUB (one).
