TYPE LOCALITY: U.S.A., California, Monterey Co., Monterey, along coast .
DISTRIBUTION: S. W. U.S.A., north to Oregon and Colorado, south to Sinaloa and Nuevo Leon ( Mexico).
COMMENT: Includes baileyi , fulvus , suboles, harquahalae, pectoralis, and lachuguilla; see Anderson, 1966, Syst. Zool., 15: 189- 198, and Hoffmeister, 1969, Misc. Publ. Univ. Kans. Mus. Nat. Hist., 51:75-91, who revised this species. Hoffmeister, 1969, found evidence of hybridization between bottae and umbrinus in Sycamore Canyon, Arizona; he provisionally considered bottae and umbrinus distinct species. Hall, 1981:469, reported evidence of intergradation in Nuevo Leon ( Mexico), reviewed Hoffmeister, 1969, and included bottae in umbrinus .
