REVIEWED BY: F. J. Brenner (FJB); H. E. Broadbooks (HEB); J. R. Callahan (JRCL); D. P. Snyder (DPS); D. A. Sutton (DAS).
COMMENT: N. American forms revised by Howell, 1929, N. Am. Fauna, 52:11-23. Includes Eutamias ( T. sibiricus ), Tamias ( T. striatus ), and Neotamias as subgenera; see Ellerman, 1940:428, Corbet, 1978:85, and Nadler et al., 1977, Am. Midi. Nat., 98:343- 353. Disagreement exists regarding the status of Eutamias and Neotamias ; see Ellis and Maxson, 1979, J. Mammal., 60:331-334, White, 1953, Univ. Kans. Publ. Mus. Nat. Hist., 5(32):543-561, and Hall, 1981:337. DPS considered this arrangement tentative until additional biochemical and cytological data can be evaluated.
