STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Parenti & Allen (1991: 319). AMS, CAS and WAM material.
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Fiji, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Adults on shallow soft bottoms adjacent to coral reefs, also entering lower reaches of rivers and streams, juveniles in estuaries, 0– 50 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
Gerres oyena (Forsskål in Niebuhr, 1775) —Blacktip silverbiddy
STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on an observation by G. R. Allen. Species name spelled oeyena in original description; the spelling oyena is an unjustified emendation in prevailing usage and can be continued.
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East and South Africa to Marshall Islands and Samoa, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Western Australia, New South Wales ( Australia), New Caledonia and Tonga. Found on inshore soft bottoms adjacent to coral reefs, 0– 20 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
