REMARKS. Oxyeleotris lineolata (non Steindachner, 1867) was recorded from Madang by Parenti & Allen (1991: 318). This is based on a misidentification; the species does not occur in northern New Guinea.

Allomogurnda nesolepis (Weber, 1907) —Yellowbelly gudgeon

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Mogurnda nesolepis by Parenti & Allen (1991: 318). WAM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Endemic to northern New Guinea. Found in rainforest streams with gravel or mud bottoms (larvae marine), 0– 5 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Belobranchus belobranchus (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1837) —Throat-spine gudgeon STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Parenti & Allen (1991: 318). AMS and CAS material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Eastern Indonesia to Philippines and New Guinea. Found in estuaries and lower reaches of streams and rivers, usually on gravel or rock bottom (larvae marine), 0– 5 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on WAM material (WAM P.30374-002). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. India to Philippines and New Guinea, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia. Found in estuaries and lower reaches of streams and rivers, usually on gravel or rock bottom, 0– 5 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Butis amboinensis (Bleeker, 1853) —Olive flathead-gudgeon

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Kailola (1975: 219). AMS, CAS, KFRS and WAM material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. India east to Philippines and New Guinea, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in mangrove habitats, mainly in estuaries but also lower reaches of rivers and streams, 0– 5 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Calumia godeffroyi (Günther, 1877) —Doublespot coral-gudgeon

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Allen & Erdmann (2012: 855). WAM material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa east to Philippines and Society Islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northern Australia and Loyalty Islands. Found on coral and rubble bottom near coral reefs, 7– 30 m. Marine.

Calumia profunda Larson & Hoese, 1980 —Deep coral-gudgeon

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Allen & Erdmann (2010: 72). WAM material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Central Indonesia east to Philippines and Fiji. Found on crevices and caves of seaward reef slopes, 8– 88 m. Marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Parenti & Allen (1991: 318). AMS and CAS material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Transkei ( South Africa) and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Gambier and Marquesas islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to New Caledonia and Rapa. Found in lagoons, estuaries and freshwater; occurs in the lower reaches of freshwater streams, usually on mud bottoms, 0– 5 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Kailola (1975: 220). AMS, KFRS and WAM material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa east to Society Islands, north to southern Japan, south to New Caledonia. Found in lagoons, estuaries and freshwater; occurs in the lower reaches of freshwater streams, usually on mud bottoms, 0– 5 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Hypseleotris guentheri (Bleeker, 1875) —Günther's carp-gudgeon

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Parenti & Allen (1991: 318); previously reported from Alexishafen (Madang District) as Ophiocara aporos alexis (part) by Whitley (1959: 23). AMS material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Eastern Indonesia east to Caroline Islands and Samoa, south to New Caledonia. Found in lower reaches of freshwater streams and adjacent estuaries, 0– 5 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

Ophiocara porocephala (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1837) —Flathead sleeper

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Parenti & Allen (1991: 318). USNM and WAM material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. South and East Africa, Seychelles and Mascarenes east to Fiji, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in brackish estuaries, river mouths and freshwater creeks, also in the lower courses of rivers, often upstream from the tidal zone, 0– 5 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on WAM material (WAM P.30374-017). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Endemic to Papua New Guinea. Found in brackish estuaries, river mouths and freshwater creeks, also in the lower courses of rivers, 0– 5 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
