Stomoxys Geoffroy, 1762: 449 View in CoL , 538. Type-species: Conops calcitrans Linnaeus, 1758 , des. I.C.Z.N., Opinion 441 (1957).
Diagnosis. General colour brownish-grey to yellowish-brown; head slightly wider than high; vertex about one-fourth of head width in male and over one-third in female; arista plumose on dorsal side; proboscis long and piercing, non-retractile; palpus slender and short; postpedicel about 2.5 times as long as pedicel; prosternum and proepisternal depression setulose; prealar seta absent; anterior katepisternal absent; vein M conspicuously curved forward towards vein R 4+ 5 in its apical section.
Comments. The genus is here recorded from Vanuatu for the first time. Two species have been recorded from the Australasian and Oceanian Regions, S. calcitrans (Linnaeus) and S. indicus Picard. The Australian Stomoxyini were reviewed by Pont (1973a).
